Chrissy Derksen Breast Cancer Update from Chrissy 1-18-10

I had treatment 6 of chemo last week. It has been 12 weeks of chemo thus far. The last two treatments were a new type for me, called Taxol. The Oncologist told me I would not need nausea medicine this round. I was elated to get past the nausea and thought nothing could be worse. The first Taxol treatment, however, still made me nauseous, but we found out that was my body’s reaction to the steroid Decadron (Dexamethosone). This last round, they cut the steroid dose in half, and it didn’t cause th… Continue

Barbara Wilkins Speech Writing: How To Write A Good One?

Speech writing is in lots of ways similar writing a paper, apart from that there is no penalty for spelling and punctuation mistakes. You should not try to write words in your speech that you are not relaxed pronouncing or don't know the meaning of because it can lead to a less fluently delivered speech. To be able to write a high-quality speech is a lot like making a good cake. Having the right elements is key for it's success. Every… Continue

Chrissy Derksen Chrissy's Breast Cancer Update

I included in last issues editor letter that I would keep readers posted of my condition, so here is a synopsis. Four surgeries and an infection... Sounds like a movie title, but that has been my life the last few months. I was a stimulus package to the medical industry. Although it was at times traumatic, I got through the surgeries and staff infection, taking it day-by-day, and have moved onto chemotherapy with Almaden's own oncologist, Dr. Cohen. I just have to thank all my pals listed on th… Continue

Jim Slacke Roth IRA conversion opportunity

FOR ALL IRA OWNERS The year 2010 will be a very important year for anyone who may benefit from converting all or part of their traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. Starting in 2010, anyone can now do a conversion. Previously, if you made over $100,000 per year, you were ineligible to do so. That restriction is being lifted, making it possible for ANYONE to do a conversion. If the conversion is done in 2010 only, you also have the option of spreading out the tax liability over 2-3 years, depending on… Continue

Russ Petruzzelli Lego Robotics: Call for volunteers for November

Hi neighbors, You might be familiar with the Lego Robotics leagues that have been going on in our neighborhood schools for the last 10 years or so. The league is looking for volunteers to judge and referee during the tournaments. I've been a referee for the last few years. It is the BEST seat in the house. As judge or referee you get to watch and examine the kids' robots up close and personal. The imagination and… Continue

Strumming for Vets / John Rola / Strumming for Vets

Most of you are aware of the sacrifices our Veterans have made for us. What many are not aware of the sacrifices many vets face when they come home. Repeated surgeries and years of rehab, some real tuff stuff. Strumming for Vets is an organization that has come up with a way to restore feeling of joy and self-worth that can be lost after extreme trauma. With donated guitars, and teachers donating their time, these vets are given a new type of therapy that works! I had about 50 music books stole… Continue

Bhavani Ramanan All Round Training in Excellence for kids ages 8-13 Sept 3-7

We adults like to say that we have lots of stress (and we do), but often we forget about our kids who face unbelievable amounts of pressure as well from dealing with school, homework, teachers, extra curricular activities and friends. When kids are overwhelmed by these things, they lash out with anger or frustration towards their parents and friends. The ART Excel course (or All Round Training in Excellence) gives children a way to manage their stress. Using powerful breathing techniques and pr… Continue

ERT ALMADEN VALLEY BURGLARY AND BREAK INS ON THE RISE!!!!!!!!!

Most of you already know that we have a critical burglary epidemic in our neighborhood. I was robbed on Calle Bonita last Tuesday morning as was a home on the upper part of Paso los Cerritos.
